LOCATION: Lakefield
This project converted an existing secondary school into an elementary school, along with a child care facility. It fosters 21st century learning concepts by creating spaces of various scales to accommodate different types of learning. The introduction of natural light and transparency was also a priority, achieved by constructing new openings in a building with very little natural light. The complex corridor circulation system was mitigated with a new wayfinding system. A colour coding system was layered into the existing corridors to help orient the students, readily identify functions and provide a sense of identity to each age group. Key node points were articulated with special design features, such as reading niches, bench seating and a ramp.
